Mike Tomkins

Contributor

Mike Tomkins is a freelance writer and reviewer for PopPhoto. An early proponent of digital photography, Mike lives in Knoxville, Tennessee, with his teenage son—quickly blossoming into an enthusiastic photographer himself—and entirely too many parakeets. The pair are lucky to be but a stone’s throw from a million photo opportunities in the picturesque Great Smoky Mountains.

Highlights

  • A long-time photography writer who’s spent decades covering the digital revolution for consumers and pros alike
  • Automotive enthusiast, sim racer, and keen amateur motorsport photographer
  • Also published by DPReview, Imaging Resource, and Internet Brands Automotive Group’s network of sites

Experience

Formerly a network engineer for Motorola, Mike joined Imaging Resource as a freelance writer at the start of 1999, where he quickly transitioned first to News Editor and subsequently to Senior Reviews Editor. In the decades since, he not only helped photographers to navigate the transitions from analog to digital, from point-and-shoots to smartphones and from DSLRs to mirrorless, but also helped establish IR as one of the web’s most respected photography destinations.

With IR sadly beset by financial difficulties in late 2019, Mike transitioned to freelancing for DPReview from the start of 2020, and added PopPhoto to his portfolio in late 2021. As an automotive enthusiast, he’s also contributed numerous articles to a variety of sites run under the banner of the Internet Brands Automotive Group.

Education

As an expatriate Brit born and raised in Asia, Mike is an alumni of Hong Kong’s prestigious King George V School, where his studies focused predominantly on science and language.

Favorite photography subject

Although I’m an enthusiastic travel, street, and landscape photographer, a penchant for all things automotive makes motorsports photography a particular favorite. I’ve also shot trackside and from the pit lane at numerous Formula One, IndyCar, and NASCAR events.
