PopPhoto Editorial Standards
Table of Contents
Since 1937, PopPhoto has been empowering readers to make the most out of their cameras. With expert yet easy-to-follow advice at its core, PopPhoto showcases the tools, techniques, and inspiration enthusiasts and experts need to create great pictures. We’re curators, who inspire creativity in our readers by surfacing stunning images and digging into the attributes that take a picture from good to great. We’re mentors, who explain the technology, tools, and techniques that empower everyone to take amazing photos. We’re analysts, who put pictures and new technology into context, tracking the trends that shape the past, present, and future of photography.
Relaunched in 2021, the new PopPhoto embraces the fact that there’s a camera in almost every hand—and that you don’t need a bagful of pricey gear to take unforgettable pictures. Smartphones and increasingly capable-yet-affordable cameras have opened up the world of photography to new platforms, emerging voices, and eclectic visions. We want all photographers—from the aspiring to the professional—to find joy in expressing themselves and making beautiful images.
Objectivity, Transparency, and Ethics
Photographers of all stripes and skill levels have turned to PopPhoto for shooting advice and inspiration for more than 80 years, and we take maintaining their trust in our advice and recommendations seriously. Decisions about what to cover sit solely with the editorial team; members of our sales, marketing, investment, ownership, or other teams have no influence over the editorial work we put on the site. Similarly, advertisers and affiliate partners—through whom we make commissions via product links on the site—in no way dictate the products we recommend or any other facet of editorial content.
To safeguard that trust, we promise to disclose any potential conflicts that may influence coverage. We require our editorial teams—both full-time and freelance—to be upfront about relationships they have that could sway coverage. No one on the PopPhoto team has any financial connection with the major camera and accessory makers we cover. Junkets or trips paid for by major camera manufacturers are a reality of the camera journalism world (it’s been this way for decades), but we’ll always disclose when a company has footed the bill for us to get access to its gear.
If we earn a commission through one of our product review links, we will disclose this. Our product reviews and recommendations are solely guided by our expertise, research, and experience. Furthermore, any branded or sponsored content will be clearly labeled, and any staff involvement in making that content will be made clear.
Accuracy and Accountability
The PopPhoto editorial team is committed to delivering the most accurate and up-to-date news, features, analysis, and recommendations possible to our readers. Every story we publish—from a piece of stunning space news to a “best of” roundup of the latest gear—passes through at least one editor, who’s responsible for ensuring the quality and accuracy of the content. In some instances, an independent fact-checker will verify all of the statements in a story.
We recognize that errors do happen—and we take them seriously. When a reader or source raises an issue with something we’ve published, an editor will re-check the proposed change against our sourcing, consult additional resources as needed, and determine if it’s necessary to issue a correction. If warranted, we’ll update the relevant passages in the text and insert a note disclosing the error in the story itself. We will never “ghost edit” a story by making a correction to facts without disclosing it.
