It's about this time every year that Adobe releases the updated versions of its consumer-oriented photo and video editing software titles, Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, respectively. This year, both programs are going into their 15th editions and they're bringing a pile of new features.

Photoshop Elements 15 has actually added some tech from the full version of Photoshop in simplified ways. For instance, there’s a new feature that can enhance smiles and squinty eyes that appears to have a lot in common with the facial features in the Photoshop liquify tool. There’s also a Dehaze tool in both Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, as well as batch processing for big collections of images. They have also added an improved tagging system to help find images and some guided edits to help learn the controls.

Of course, because of its target audience, Photoshop Elements 15 also has a rather large selection of more craft-oriented tools, like a collage maker, picture text tools for creating inspirational Facebook memes, and custom digital frames.

Premiere Elements 15 has a similar set of features, allowing for things like image stabilization in post, beefed-up audio editing, new titles, and filters to make stylized movies.

If you’re just jumping into the Elements family of products, it will cost $149. To upgrade from a recent older version costs $119. For someone who is a dedicated photography enthusiast, it seems worth taking a hard look at the Creative Cloud For Photographers bundle, which comes with full Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC, as it’s a much more powerful solution. But, simplicity can be a selling point in some cases, so just be sure to compare before jumping in.
