Today’s Photo of the Day is something a little different! It was submitted by the awesome collection of the US Geological Survey. Here’s some info about the photo, which was shot (gasp) on film! Here’s our #TBT of a massive lava fountain spewing high into the air above an area of papaya trees. This particular shot was taken in January 1960 in Kapoho, Hawaii. A bit of historical story-telling from the USGS HVO website refers to Jan 27, 1960 and the town of Kapaho: “Late on that fateful day, very fluid lava was pouring from vents B, L, and K and feeding the massive a a flows between Pu u Kuki i and Kapoho. This new source of lava doomed the town. At 2330 the flow was nearing the town. In the next 30 minutes, the rapidly moving a a flow moved southwestward through the streets, overwhelmed building after building and leaving only memories behind. By midnight January 27, most of Kapoho had been destroyed. You can read more about the photo here. If you want your photo considered for Photo of the Day, join up with our Flickr Group!

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from Flickr-user Federica Giordano. Personally, I love how this portrait shrugs off the traditional wisdom of “fill the frame with your portrait subject” and takes advantage of a dramatic and extremely beautiful background. The pose and expression are compelling and the film-like processing is extremely current. You can see more of Federica’s work on this website or on this Flickr stream. Today’s Photo of the Day was shot by Flickr-user, Windman Photography. It was shot with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 with a Lumix G Vario PZ 45-175mm F/4-5.6 lens. It’s also worth noting that the shot was taken at ISO 3200 and yet still looks very clean and vibrant, which was an unrealistic expectation just a few years ago. The composition adds a good bit of drama, giving the sharp bird a nice array of bokeh as a background. Plus, the log slashing across the bottom left corner of the frame also gives the whole thing a dynamic feel. You can see more of Windman Photography’s work at this Flickr page.
