Today’s Photo of the Day comes from Curt Storlazzi, a research oceanographer for the U.S. Geological Survey. This underwater image was taken in Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands and shows a wave breaking over a section of coral reef. A healthy coral reef can help reduce the wave’s energy by the time it reaches the shoreline, to prevent island flooding. See more images from the U.S. Geological Survey here.
