A Month of Photos of the Day

August 3, 2015
Today's Photo of the Day comes from Curt Storlazzi, a research oceanographer for the U.S. Geological Survey. This underwater image was taken in Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands and shows a wave breaking over a section of coral reef. A healthy coral reef can help reduce the wave's energy by the time it reaches the shoreline, to prevent island flooding. See more images from the U.S. Geological Survey here.Curt Storlazzi/USGS

Zirino says that the sunrise that morning wasn't doing much for her and she wasn't interested in taking the stereotypical shots that every tourist captures so she pulled out a zoom lens to get a different perspective. "The sun was right behind the hoodoos at Inspiration Point so I knew they'd get this amazing glow," she says of the image. See more of her work here. Laura Zirino
