Latest Photo Craze: The Waking Cat

I’m back from another trip, and there is a ton of photo news to probe. Nothing, however, seems more urgent than this story about the latest trend in photography: It seems that lots of people are now waking up their sleeping cats, just to photograph them. The results, examples of which you see above and below, are hilarious. That’s to be expected: As a photo editor who has seen literally millions of images of dogs and cats, I can tell you that cats make funny photos. Cats are compelling because they’re strange. With dogs, you can try to depict some emotional quality; with cats, it’s all comedy. But I wonder if it’s cruel to disturb a cat during it’s daily 23 hours of slumber simply to make a funny picture.
