I once again have a small glut of notices in my “photo contests” folder, and figured it was time to unload them on the public consciousness.

First up, the Al-Thani Award for Photography, which is funded by Sheik Saoud Al-Thani from Qatar. The press release is given over to an endearing level of hyperbole, but with a $50,000 cash prize and Leica M6 as awards, it’s not so far off to claim that “never before so much prize money has been rewarded in one single photo contest.” And runner up prizes are pretty respectable too. Entries will be accepted in a no-theme category and this year’s themed category, “water.” The majority of past winners have come from Qatar, surrounding countries, and Europe, but that seems like a good reason for some Americans to break in this year. Entry deadline is November 5.
