For five months, Rick Wetterau ( to photograph a tomatillo husk. He’d positioned it a million different ways on his tabletop studio, under fluorescent lights and in available sunlight. Then came an inspiration: A penlight. “Using a long exposure with a narrow beam allowed me to preserve the spider web detail and create a thicker shadow,” Wetterau explains. We were pretty impressed with this image. It also reminded us of a tip on using pinpoint light sources to add intrigue to photos, which we ran in our September 2009 Picture Doctor.—Lori Fredrickson.
