There’s a saying on the internet where people refer to a bad quality photo as having been “taken with a potato.” It’s a silly phrase meant to imply that the photo looks terrible. Artist Kotama Bouabane, however, has taken the concept one step further and made his own camera out of a coconut.

Really, the coconut concoction is only a “camera” in the most basic sense of the word. He drilled a hole in it, cut it in half, and then put some photographic paper in between the two pieces. The exposure is made by uncovering the drilled hole to let light in.

The resulting pictures look pretty much exactly as you might expect. So, even if you’re not into this type of #art, you can still appreciate how it illustrates the incredible breadth of the photographic process. In fact, there’s a long tradition of making cameras out of all kinds of crazy objects.

This seems like it could actually be a great project to try with kids in order to get them interested in thinking creatively and using photographic techniques in an interesting way. Plus, you get to eat the delicious coconut meat before you head out to shoot.
