Getty Images has announced the winners of the 2007 Grants for Editorial Photography. The winners, Ziyah Gafic, a Getty Images photographer from Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Christopher Anderson, a Magnum photographer from New York, will each receive $20,000 grants to pursue their respective photojournalism projects.

Gafic says he will use his grant to complete his nine-part photo essay entitled “Troubled Islam: Short Stories From Troubled Societies,” which documents the aftermath of war and violence in Muslim communities across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. His ninth and final essay will document the impact of the recent Israel-Hezbollah conflict as people return to Lebanon. “My aim is to capture the quiet loneliness and determination of people trying to carry on with their lives when the very fabric of their community, rituals and social life has been torn apart,” he says.

On the other side of the world, Anderson has trained his camera on the socialist revolution in Latin America for his project, “The Bolivarian Revolution: Venezuela and Bolivia at the Crossroads.” Instead of documenting the revolution itself (a revolution Anderson says is largely ignored by the Western media), he has focused on the humanity behind the events — the people behind the revolution and those it affects. “Oil and politics make Latin America relevant today, but I am shocked to discover that there is no interest or financial support from the magazines to cover these subjects,” he says. “I argue that Latin America does matter, and that this is a particularly interesting time to invest in documenting life there. My hope is that this grant will make that possible.”

The winners were chosen from a pool of 153 entries by three judges: MaryAnne Golon, the director of photography at Time; Rebecca McClelland, the deputy picture editor at the Sunday Times Magazine in London; and Jean-Francois Leroy, the director general of Visa Pour L’Image in Perpignan, France. In addition to the $20,000 grant, Gafic and Anderson will receive editorial support from Getty’s photo editors.
