SD Association announces 300MB/s cards

Not to worry, the new cards will be backwards compatible with all existing SD, SDHC and SDXC devices (they will not however work at full speed when used with these devices). These new high-speed cards will be part of the SD 4.0 specification, expected to launch in early 2011.

The SD Association has defined a new extension for the popular format, allowing for the development of SDXC and SDHC cards with data-transfer-rates of up to 300MB/s via a second row of connector pins. These new transfer rates are more than 3 times faster than the original theoretical max of UHS-I cards and more than 16 times faster than traditional cards.
