Where to Go and What to See

Though my location precludes it, I am eager to see Erwan Frotins exhibit Strangers (at M + B Gallery in Los Angeles) because he takes invigorating portraits of natural vegetation. The approach is simple: a single plant or flower is placed in front of a colored backdrop. But the result is more visually stimulating than that might suggest. The color schemes complement each plant beautifully—sometimes matching in tone, sometimes delightfully in contrast.

And I imagine the larger-scale prints will be all the more impressive, as the subtlety of color and light in Frotin's images appear to be of key importance.   —Lindsay Sakraida
