Where to Go and What to See

My gallery pick this week goes to Colleen Plumb's show, Animals Are Outside Today, at the City Gallery of Photography in Chicago. The show features a fascinating collection of photos of animals caged, deceased, stuffed, misplaced, and—for lack of a better word—re-appropriated for consumer products (like a feathered hat). The series also incorporates artistic renderings of animals (in murals, clothing, etc), which raises questions about the creature's place in human culture and mythology. Plumb's images are far from the stereotypically cold, intentionally stark pictures we're used to seeing when dealing with animal rights, which makes this refreshing series all the more challenging and intriguing.
