For a truly awe-inspiring photographic experience, head to the Aperture Gallery in New York on February 19 to see Jonathan Torgovnik's show Intended Consequences. The photojournalist was in Rwanda documenting for Newsweek the state of AIDS/HIV in Africa, 25 years after the initial outbreak, and was so moved by what he found, he continued to come back; through his interviews with Rwandan people afflicted with the virus, he met many women who had contracted the disease through rape during ethnic cleansing. For this heartbreaking series, Torgovnik presents their testimonies alongside a portrait with their children—who were conceived during rape. The moving exhibition will surely upset, but it will also—surprisingly—inspire. Torgovnik shows how these women were able to overcome such adversity.
