James submitted this photo taken with a Canon 40D with a 50mm f/1.8 lens with an exposure of 1/200 sec at f/4 with an ISO of 400. We just dedicated a story about 50mm lenses in our February issue covering everything from why they are so important and what situations their great for shooting with. We concluded that 50mm lenses are great for low light, shallow depth of field, action, close ups, and portraits. For such an important lens, I don’t think the subject matter of this photo does it justice. Yes, there is shallow depth of field but it’s not that interesting and actually distracts from the statue. Next time try focusing on the subject and throwing the background out of focus.
