So it’s a little cold, dreary and wet outside but all is not lost.  Use the bad weather month to your advantage to improve your indoor lighting.  You don’t have to have a fancy lighting setup, use your desk lamp for a light and a white poster board for a reflector.  Grab a sheet of any color for your background. Use a shallow depth of field and some distance between your background and your subject, and the sheet will work perfectly.  Look around, there are amazing things sitting around you just waiting to be photographed.  To simplify the whole set up use a tripod and a cable release, move the light around, watch where the light falls and how it reflects on your subject.  Take time to notice how the shadows define your subject.  If you are really organized, make a photo chart of the different light placements and your results.
