Bryan Peterson's book, Understanding Exposure, explains how you can use your aperture setting creatively with Holiday lights.  Very simply by allowing your image to be slightly out of focus the lights will appear as the size and shape of the aperture opening.  For circles use your widest aperture setting, for hexagons use a basic aperture like f/8 or f/11.  This is a great way to learn how to use your aperture setting creatively and apply to other photographs.
