An Important Book and Blog from Avakian

Alexandra Avakian is a veteran photojournalist (she's with Contact Press Images) who has covered all sorts of stories for magazines like Time and National Geographic. I put that in quotes because she defines the Muslim world as any place she worked on a Muslim-related story--from Kyrgystan to California. Her photography is visually adventurous and often beautiful.

Alexandra Avakian is a veteran photojournalist (she's with Contact Press Images) who has covered all sorts of stories for magazines like Time and National Geographic. This fall she is bringing out a book called "Windows of the Soul," which is a kind of visual diary about one aspect of her career. For 17 years, she says, she has been traveling through "the Muslim world." I put that in quotes because she defines the Muslim world as any place she worked on a Muslim-related story--from Kyrgystan to California. Her photography is visually adventurous and often beautiful. She has also launched an intriguing blog with National Geographic. Nominally about her work, the blog could become an interesting forum about world culture. Seems like something for Geographic (that is, featuring a photographer in this way). I like it.-David Schonauer
