Before After

Dan Arsenault submitted this photo of a bird that he shot with his Nikon D80. The photo was taken with an exposure of 1/1250sec, f/5.6, ISO 200 and a focal length of 300mm. The bird makes for an interesting subject with its wings spread and reflection in the water. My main concern is the composition. The bird placed in the center of the photo goes against the rule of thirds. Also, there is too much background that is out of focus that takes away from the main subject. I suggest cropping vertically for better composition. In addition the exposure could use a little tweaking. I would brighten the highlights in Photoshop by moving the slider in Level Adjustments. Just make sure you don’t over brighten the image.
