Jerad Heffner submitted this photo taken with an Olympus C5500 Sport Zoom with an exposure of 1/2000 sec at f/8 and ISO 80. First things first, please do not shoot directly into the sun! Having a huge blown out circle in the middle of your photo is not attractive and throws off the exposure for the surrounding area. The sky and trees are so dark because the camera exposed for the bright sun. Also, you get unwanted flare. Next time, try shooting a different subject or better landscape.
