Your Photo: Our Critique

Daniel Genesee submitted this self portrait taken with his Pentax K10D. Daniel has spent some time processing this image, using Adobe Lightroom 2.0 to convert it to black-and-white. There is also some skin softening and work on the eyes, adjustments to the original exposure and contrast. He was clearly going for a high key effect. Daniel has used the window and natural light, which has a nice effect. The right side of his face (left in frame) could use less exposure. The lighter cheek is vying for attention with the left eye (right in frame). With all of the adjustment done I wonder why the stray hair cutting across his left eye wasn't removed and with all of the skin softening, there's no reason not to soften the pores on the nose as well. With a face shaped like this one, I would like to see a more vertical crop. This image is a little over processed for my taste but that is what the photographer was trying to achieve.
