Brian Wallace shot this image with a 50mm 1.4 lens on a Nikon D300 using shutter priority. Brian has provided the following settings, ISO 1600, 1/1600 sec at f/2.2. The white balance is well done. The fast shutter has frozen the action nicely and you see the ice flying. For a sports photograph this is OK, it really isn't showing a great moment of action. I am pleased to see the players face but the puck has already been hit and is lost in the uniform, maybe a moment sooner you would have caught the puck leaving the stick. Brian since you have asked for input for a longer lens, consider the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8, you will have to use a slower shutter but if need be using the D300 you can bump up the ISO and still get a nice shot. It isn't super long but will get you headed in the right direction. Hockey is not an easy sport to shoot and you are definitely on the right track.
