There are photos that surprise us by revealing things that are not as we imagine them to be. Then there are photos, often more surprising, that show things looking exactly the way we want them to look. The images here, taken by John McConnico for Associated Press are of the latter variety. They show the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which officially opened on February 26. Isn’t it great that designers decided it would be okay if this “doomsday vault” for the world’s seed supplies, on a Norwegian island in the Arctic Ocean, could look like Superman’s Fortress of Solitude at the North Pole? If you were designing the vault, isn’t this how you would make it look? If you were photographing the vault, wouldn’t you shoot it just the way McConnico did? Bravo.—David Schonauer
