There seems to be a theme of the young and the new permeating openings that decided to brave the busy week before Christmas. Sara Tecchia is reverse exhibiting a selection of work from Saatchi Online, which apparently gets 50 million hits a day now. (Really?) An interesting new chapter in the book of internet democratization. Then there is Michael Franzini's show going up at Peter Hay Halpert taken from his book 100 Young Americans. Guess what it's about. There have actually been several books out this year that try to grasp the zeitgeist of the next generation through teen portraits; and of those, I think this book comes the closest to succeeding. Finally there is a show titled Visual Griots of Mali at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, the results of a project in Mali to "empower" sixth-graders by teaching them to make photos.
