The photo competition is open to amateur photographers, 18 years or older, who have captured a stunning image in the past three years.

Smithsonian Magazine Fifth Annual Photo Contest
Photos must be submitted at photocontest.smithsonianmag.com by 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, January 3, 2008. Fifty finalists will be selected to have their works published on the Smithsonian Web site and in Smithsonian magazine. Five category winners will be awarded $500 cash prizes. One grand prize winner will receive a four-day, three-night "Smithsonian Journeys Grand Canyon Weekend Adventure" for two from July 11-14, 2008.

The photo competition is open to amateur photographers, 18 years or older, who have captured a stunning image in the past three years.

The five contest categories are:

Americana—Events, objects or activities connecting the American people to their cultural heritage.

The Natural World_—Animals, plants and landscapes; geological or climatological features; and scientific processes and endeavors.

People—Individuals from all walks of life.

Travel—Locales, people or activities in the United States and abroad that convey a sense of place.

Altered Images_—Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or traditional special effects (hand coloring, toning, bleaching, collage and photo composites).

Garden Photographer of the Year 2008
Go to www.gpoty.org to enter the Garden Photographer of the Year contest. Entries are accepted until January 31, 2008. Participants can enter single images or themed portfolios in each of the following categories:

• Plant Portraits
• Garden Views
• My Garden
• Life in the Garden
• Trees

The top 100 winning and commended images will be shown at a purpose-built outdoor exhibition in Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, London from May to September 2008.
The cash prizes include £5,000 for Best Single Image and £3,000 (including £2,000 Calumet vouchers) for The Best Portfolio.
There is also a Young Garden Photographer of the Year contest for photographers under 16-years-old.
