Your Photo: Our Critique

What wonderful use of negative space! What a fantastically sharp, crisp contour line on the silhouette. Just about perfect. It’s five-star-worthy, and we’ll blame your monitor for the little nitpicks we fix below.

On our calibrated monitors, and cross-checked with Photoshop’s Info Palette, we can see some slightly less-than-true-black numbers in the child’s shirt (see the two control points 1 and 2 on Photo 1 below) Nothing too serious on most monitors, but on a print, these can be much more obnoxious. So, we’re going to push the black point in curves over a bit until these numbers zero out (Photo 2.) Then we’re going to add a slight contrast-boosting S-Curve to make the sunset colors pop even more. See—just a couple of minor tweaks to optimize an excellent image!
