Your Photo: Our Critique

This silhouette of a bird sent in by Matt McKown shows how important it is to learn about white balance. Cameras come with preset white balances and you can also set the color temperature or use a custom white balance.

This silhouette of a bird sent in by Matt McKown shows how important it is to learn about white balance. The silhouette of the bird is sharp, and catching the profile makes it more powerful. The bird looking across the picture also guides your eyes across the picture.
I think this picture could be improved by warming up the background by working with his white balance. Cameras come with preset white balances and you can also set the color temperature or use a custom white balance. In this case I would try either the presets or dial in a color temperature (lower around 3000 will add blues or cool the white balance and the higher numbers like 8000 will warm the shot up with more golden tones) to enhance the background. The picture might also be more dramatic without the dark background across the top of the picture.
