Where to Go and What to See

~Miki Johnson

In the midst of all the PhotoPlus craziness in New York this week, there are shows going up by two of my favorite documentary/photojournalist photographers. Fazal Sheikh was named one of our Heroes of Photography in June and I have come to respect his work very highly since then. I became familiar with Ashley Gilbertson even more recently, when we wrote about him in our November/December issue (it will be on the stands soon, so you'll just have to check out the story for yourself). His new book, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, wins the prize for wittiest Iraq book title, but his images are rarely funny, except in that dark, haunting way the realities of death and war can strike us.

But really this week I'm just jealous that I don't live on the other coast, because if I did, you can bet I'd be at the symposium on Documentary Photography in the Digital Age at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. The line-up is about as start-studded as academic photographic circles get: Danny Lyon, Anne Wilkes Tucker, Fred Ritchin, Chris Killip, and Stephen Perloff.
