After being confronted by protests from photographers and civil liberty advocates, New York City has ditched previous plans and will allow photographers to snap away on city streets without getting permits. The earlier plans would have required any two people using a camera in a public location for more than a half hour to get a permit and expensive insurance. The new rules are based in simple, common sense. They distinguish between photographers and filmmakers with large crews and truckloads of equipment that congest city streets.
