How to Get A Spontaneous Smile

A spontaneous smile is one of the most gratifying things to capture, but it’s also one of the most difficult. And coaxing a good one out of strangers—especially kids—is usually twice as much work as setting up a studio.

But Federico Sartorio has found a neat way to make it, excuse the pun, as easy as taking candy from a baby, using a Pez dispenser—as a hot-shoe mount. He trims the bottom of the dispenser with a box cutter to fit the mount, and fills it with candy. When he meets a child (or an adult, for that matter), he offers them a piece—and as they reach up to grab it, he snaps their photo. What a treat!
