Unfortunately, there are not too many good things to say about this photo submitted by Frederick Reddy. At Pop Photo we see a nauseating amount of sunsets, and most don’t meet my standards of a good photograph. This one, for example, is so monochromatic. Who wants to see so much yellow? A good sunset should have many vibrant colors, or at least more than one. The composition bothers me as well. The horizon line and shoreline divide the photo into three separate parts of similar sizes. Cropping out part of the sky or sand would make for a more interesting composition. Since the photographer was shooting into the sun, the camera metered for the bright light, making the rest of the photograph too dark. It’s hard to make out any detail in the sand, girl playing soccer, or the boats in the background. My suggestion would be to meter the girl so she is exposed correctly.
