We had crafted a response to this, but words fail…

Dear Editor,

Re.: “Before They’re Gone”, Debbie Grossman, Pop Photo June 2007.

Being an outdoor enthusiast, conservationist, and photographer, this article with its wonderful photographs resonated with me.

However, the article raised a question in its second paragraph that is misleading. I do not only mean the environmental disasters visited Florida and many regions of the west due to cows/cattle excesses and overgrazing. Indelicately raising a point here, for example, the 45 or so remaining Florida Panthers will find the statement that “Florida’s cowboys are this environment’s guardians” much more than a distraction.

Our imperiled wilderness and habitat losses have the same underlying driver as is the U.S. contributions to climate change: our burgeoning population and overpopulation.
