The best advice I can give to anyone after my ordeal, is to read John Harrington's book, Best Business Practices for Photographers.

In it, Harrington outlines how to determine how to set rates for assignments and how to make a living before you hit it big (or if you never do), and all the things that photographers need to consider: the cost of equipment, insurance, travel, marketing, and once you do start selling your work, paying taxes.
