This Mentor Series Trek to the US Virgin Islands placed us at non-stop different locations, each with different areas of photography to “focus” on. At one location, we were outfitted with snorkel gear and Nikon Coolpix AW110 underwater cameras to photograph sea turtles and coral. At other locations we were taken through a rainforest, up the sides of mountains on a tram and even given the opportunity to photograph from a helicopter. Sunrise and sunset were always captured from different vantage points, including beaches, historic sites and even aboard a catamaran. We even got the chance to photograph different models for amazing shots that gave you a real “feel” for the islands.

Layne Kennedy expertly guided us through all of this, sharing his insight into how to get the most from each location and thinking outside of the box. It wasn’t long before we realized just how vast his knowledge of photography is. Layne gladly shared his answers to any questions that we could throw out there, whether it was regarding technical equipment, his creative process, insights on the photo industry, the use of digital editing software, stories from other Treks he’s been on and ways we could learn in the future. He gave us great information, whether bobbing in the ocean with us, hiking on the trail or relaxing over great food and drink at the end of the day. I took far more away from this Trek than I ever expected possible and am looking forward to my chance to participate in another one.
