Street Art NYC

The graffiti mecca known as 5 Pointz may have been white-washed last November, but now it’s impressive artwork can live forever thanks to a new Google Cultural Institute project.

Google’s Street Art Project, which launched Tuesday, features over 5,000 images documenting temporary public art installations from around the world.

Users can browse through public exhibitions in Mexico City, Lisbon or buildings that have since been painted over or completely demolished, like 5 Pointz or Tour Paris 13. The work can be explored by exhibit, artist or location and big names like Shepard Fairey, Banksy and INVADER all make appearances.

Although the database is maintained by Google, according to the New York Times the company avoided curating from Street View. Instead, Google is working with organizations like Street Art NYC, Global Street Art Foundation and MoSA to create collections.
