American Photo: A Loving Victory For Civil Rights
Photographs of the Loving couple, a family who fought marriage discrimination in the American south, are given new life at ICP in New York
A small collection of images by LIFE photographer Grey Villet depict married life between Richard Perry and Mildred Jeter Loving. Today, the scenes captured in the photographs seem fairly commonplace, but it was an entirely different story back in the late ’50s. The images are currently on display at the International Center of Photogrpahy and tell a powerful story of love and the fight for civil rights. American Photo has an interesting look into the series that’s worth a look, even if you wait until after Valentine’s Day.
