PPI: Do you sell your SP work? If so where/how?
I’ve sold a handful of my work, and wouldn’t mind selling
more (hint, hint!), but mostly I do street photography because I feel compelled
to. As John Lennon once said when asked why he kept making music: “you
breathe in, you breathe out.”
PPI: What's your day job?
I am the managing editor of Popular Photography & Imaging.
PPI: Has someone ever seen themselves in one of your pictures? Did
they demand payment?
No.
PPI: What are your 5 favorite places to shoot street photos? (Be specific--street
corners/intersections/etc. if possible, not just “London” or “New
York”)
• New York: any part of Times Square, Fifth Avenue and 57th Street,
34th Street and SixthAve.
• Jerusalem: King George Street near the pedestrian mall
• The Las Vegas Strip, especially near Bally’s and the Paris Hotel.
PPI: What photo books do you have on your bookshelf? (choose your favorites)
• Women Are Beautiful, Public Relations—Garry Winogrand
• Here and There—Helen Levitt
• Hand Book—Elliott Erwitt
• The Americans—Robert Frank
• A Day Off—Tony Ray-Jones
PPI: What camera(s), lenses, film, etc. do you use? Why?
Leica M3, Kobalux 28mm f/3.5 lens. This system is small, reliable,
and I can afford it. The Kobalux (sold by Adorama) is almost as sharp from f/5.6
to f/11 as a Leica and that works for me for quite a bit less than a Leica lens.
I used to use a 35mm f/3.5 Summaron.
Other cameras that I use less often: Cannonet QL17, Konica Hexar Silver. I
ALWAYS have an Olympus Stylus with me.
PPI: How many pictures do you shoot a week? A month? A year?
I shoot about 100 to 200 rolls a year.
