Lens Test: 80mm f/2.8 Schneider-Kreuznach AF-Xenotar

Superb normal lens for Rollei 6008 AF

January 2004

Specifications: 80MM, Aperture: f/2.8 , 7 elements in 6 groups. Focusing turns 160 degrees clockwise. Diagonal view angle: 52 degrees. Weight: 1 lb. 1-3/4 oz. Filter size: V1 bayonet. Mount: Rolleiflex 6008 AF. List price: $2,400. Street price: Approx. $2000.

What you should know: Like all current AF lenses for the Rollei 6008 AF, this normal lens is made in Germany by Schneider-Kreuznach. Its PQS designation denotes that its built-in leaf shutter has a top speed of 1/1000 sec.

Hands on: Slightly large and a bit heavy for its class, the 80 is beautifully finished in semigloss black, and balances very well on the 6008 AF. The wide, ribbed, rubberized focusing ring turns smoothly and with well-damped action in manual-focus mode, and does not turn during autofocusing. White-on-black aperture and metric distance numerals are large and legible, as is comprehensive yellow-on black depth-of-field scale with red IR index. Footage numerals are less visable in green-on-black. Aperture ring locks at “A” setting for shutter-priority or programmed autoexposure. Front ring has three-lobed inner bayonet and four-lobed outer bayonet for mounting filters, etc.

In the lab: (No SQF figures possible with this lens due to equipment limitations. Lines-per-millimeter resolution figures are furnished instead.) Minimal barrel distortion (0.19%), an excellent result. At closest focusing distance of 39-1/2 inches (1:10.2) center and corner sharpness were excellent at all apertures. Optimum aperture was f/8.

In the field: Test transparencies were very sharp and contrasty, and flare was very well controlled at all apertures. No light falloff was observed at any aperture-outstanding.

Conclusion: One of the best 80mm f/2.8 lenses for a 6x6cm camera we have ever tested.
