Photoshop 7’s Transform tool really got a workout in making Shannon Cramer’s well-fed, dapper otter. The 34-year-old interior designer spent about 10 hours manipulating her four basic elements: Transforming the fish so it would dangle from the otter’s mouth, then copying and pasting the nose over the fish; modifying the hat so it rested perfectly on the otter’s head; dodging and burning the elements for realistic shadows; and Transforming the fish again so it became petals on the flower. “Basically, it was very simple,” the Cottage Grove, Minnesota, resident said. “Just lots of layers.”

C.J. Hodge III assigned our Digital Wizard Contest as homework for his high school digital imaging students. “It was a great project for the class,” says the 42-year-old from Jamesville, New York. And a winner for the teacher.
Working in Photoshop 7, Hodge pieced together bits of nearly every photo to create his spaceships, including flower petals for the wings. “I couldn’t find a ground I liked,” he says, so he made the floor out of corks. It goes to show the power of imagination.
The artistry that Andrey Kasatsky, 31, displays as a soloist in the Milwaukee Ballet Company shows up in other places. Like his Photoshop 7 skills.
Last year’s Grand Prize winner created the “Goddess of the Sea” by combining the fish’s body with the woman’s head, Cloning the texture of fish skin, and applying it all over. He outlined the body with the Pen tool to create smooth transitions, and placed the figure inside a globe. “Photoshop is my hobby,” says the Moscow native. But we think he could have another career ahead of him.
