$200 2nd Prize Winner

“My dream job is to be a concept artist for a game studio,” says Chris Mayernik, from Fairfax, Virginia. The 19-year-old college student admits that he “couldn’t draw a stick figure” until he discovered the world of digital imaging.
Now, Mayernik does his drawings with the Paintbrush tool in Photoshop 7. He created the sunlight and shadows with the brush, eschewing plug-ins or filters (“I don’t use filters often—when I do, I only use Gaussian blur and Sharpen”). With each shadow and sunbeam on its own layer, he painted in the dramatic light, adjusting the hue, saturation, and lightness values for control.
