$1,000 Grand Prize Winner

“I didn’t have a concrete idea,” says Portland, Oregon, resident David Birkbeck. The 46-year-old screw machinist (and budding motorsports photographer—see www.daimage.com) didn’t create his winning image with any theme in mind. “It kind of all came together” as he spent about 10 hours working in Adobe Photoshop CS (plus “200 hours thinking about it”).
Birkbeck used the Liquify filter on the otter heads to create his eerily realistic otter men. After tweaking with the lighting effects in the background, he created the table from the wood paneling of the sumo shot and placed a fish for sale on top. Then he took the texture of fur from the otter’s head to create the final piece: the hand proffering payment for dinner.
“Photoshop was self-taught,” Birkbeck says, “and I’m sure I have a few unconventional methods that would make some pros want to roll their eyes. But I manage to get results.”
