Review: I bought this mid range telephoto for fast action sport coverage and to compliment the longer super telephoto I use in wildlife photography. It has fully met my expectations. First it is tack sharp. I tend to shoot wide or nearly wide open to max my shutter speed and freeze action. Under these conditions I am extremely pleased with the corner to corner sharpness and crystal clear images I get. Even with the matching Nikon 2x tele-extender the results are good.
The build quality is impressive. It is all metal and built to take rugged use and last for a lifetime. It also has a rubber sealing gasket at the lens mount - a feature not commonly found. The build quality of the tripod collar is very high and it is very smooth in operation.
I am also impressed with the speed of the AFS focus when coupled with the dynamic focus mode of my D200. I don't miss many shots of birds on the wing with this set up. The results are always excellent.
The lens is quite heavy and after a day in the field you know it. I use a Lowepro harness strap to keep the camera/lens from wildly swinging around during the treks to many of the spots I shoot from. This really helps.
Lastly, the lens is expensive. However, considering the results it delivers and its very robust build quality it is an exceptional value.
