Everyone talks about how tough the magazine business is these days, as readers and advertisers drift to the Internet and other media. But for me magazines are still the traditional (and best) showcase for photographs, and my picks this week for the best magazine photography show just how powerful and seductive pictures can be.

  • Magnum photos at the Gramercy Park Hotel

The hottest hotel in New York has discovered photography. The brand new Gramercy Park Hotel has partnered with Magnum Photos, adorning each of its rooms with images from the Magnum archive. This must be some kind of marketing milestone for Magnum, which apparently isn’t your father’s photo agency anymore.

  • Remembering Joe Rosenthal

When Joe Rosenthal died yesteday, at age 94, the headlines were predictable: “Iwo Jima Flag-Raising Photographer dead” said ABCnews.com. Joe earned his place in photographic history for taking just one picture: the shot of six U.S. marines pushing a large American flag skyward on Mount Suribachi during the opening hours of the bloody battle for Iwo Jima. The date was February 23, 1945, and the image would shape the life of the man who took the picture as well as the lives of the marines he photographed.

  • VII Joins MySpace

VII Photo is male, 35 years old, married, and lives in Venice, California -- at least according to the photojournalism agency's official MySpace profile. MySpace, the insanely popular social networking site (46 million unique visitors in July) owned by Rupert Murdoch's Fox Interactive Media, is increasingly being utilized by web-savvy marketers to drum up business, so kudos to VII for being one of the first photography firms to take advantage.

  • A Photo a Day

For a few weekends this summer, Roelof Bakker's flat at 29 Rosebery Gardens in London became one of the world's most intimate gallery spaces. The Holland transplant had made his 2005 New Year's resolution to take one photo a day -- and after managing to keep it going all year, he displayed his year's worth of photos on the walls of his home.

  • Pictures that Lie

CNET has compile a nice slideshow of images that have been exposed as forgeries and frauds over the years. All the big ones are represented, including Time's ill-fated OJ Simpson cover, National Geographic's Texas Monthly's Harley-straddling Ann Richards, and the more recent Newsweek Martha Stewart Frankenstein image.
