But on display in the packed, ballroom of a space was not some new Spring line, but an old recluse—Frank—who person after person would stand up to praise and thank for deeply altering their perceptions of art and life.

  • Annie or Afghanistan?

I have to admit when I first saw Annie Leibovitz on the cover of Newsweek I was a bit surprised, but pleasantly so. How often are photographers granted the status of cover subjects on such an esteemed news periodical?

Then my rosy worldview came crashing down thanks to a blog item by The Nation's Tom Engelhardt, which puts the issue into perspective by noting that Annie's appearance on the U.S. version of the magazine bumped the real news story to the inside pages.

  • Life Photographer Martha Holmes Dies

Martha Holmes, one of the five women who worked as staff photographers for Life magazine, has died. She is best known for her pictures of Jackson Pollock splashing paint on a canvas, but her she shot plenty of other ssubjects as well during her distinguished career.

  • The Skinny on Thin

As a way to jolt the fashion industry out of its anorexic mindset, the banning of size-zero models from Madrid's catwalks was just fine in my opinion. I agree with Dave Schonauer's blog that the line should be drawn at a government mandate. But anyone who needs reminding that the female body-image crisis isn't limited to haute couture should check out Thin (Chronicle Books, $35), Lauren Greenfield's powerful new study of patients at a Florida eating disorders clinic.

  • Should Goverment Ban Size-Zero Models?

The debate over super-skinny models at this fall’s fashion shows continues this week. On one side, you’ve got those who agree with Spanish fashion authorities, who banned size-zero models from the catwalks during recent shows. Several British politicians then called for legislation banning size-zero models from London fashion shows, as a way to protect the models themselves and the women and girls who view them as role models. But some fashion designers and marketers believe such legislation would be a form of government censorship. What do you think?

  • Hundreds Attend Joe Rosenthal Memorial

More than 600 dignataries, family members and friends paid tribute to photographer Joe Rosenthal Sept. 15 at a memorial service held in San Francisco.

David Hume Kennerly, a dear friend of Rosenthal, was kind enough to provide a detailed transcript of the remarks, including words of rememberance and tribute from two former presidents, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Tom Brokaw.

  • Foreign Policy Debate

I differ with Jay on his criticism of Foreign Policy (FP) magazine for its 9/11 anniversary cover. With the possible exception of news magazines--and FP really isn't one--covers traditionally aren't held to the same journalistic standard as the photographs inside. I'll get to the manipulation and copying issues Jay brings up in a minute, but here are a couple of things to keep in mind about magazine covers.

  • Want to Buy Peter Beard's House?

But wait, there's more. You can also buy Beard's storied estate in Montauk, Long Island.

Photographer Peter Beard has a spectacular new book coming out this fall from Taschen. It'll be a collector's item, with a limited-edition run, so if you're as interested in Beard as I am you might want to pre-order. The book is a retrospective of his Africa images and his fashion images, and it captures the intense and insane (insanely intense?) life of this unique (bewildering?) photographer.

After the jump, we'll divulge the latest on plans to produce an American photojournalism festival, we'll reveal the mystery of who took the Pitt/Jolie baby photos, and try to wrap our heads around the latest moves at Corbis.

Each year upon returning from the Visa pour l'Image photojournalism festival in Perpignan, American photo editors and photographers can be heard talking about hosting their own festival on this side of the pond. This year the talk is no different, but for once this is no idle chatter.
