Advertising photographer Carl Warner's "foodscapes" are astonishing constructions of edibles that are as much photograph as bizarre storybook pictures. With a background in illustration, advertising photography and landscape photography, Warner's managed to combine it all into an utterly remarkable career — crafting huge, vaguely surrealist landscapes out of foodstuffs.

In a paper set to be presented at the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, taking place late June, researchers from MIT looked at what makes a photograph memorable. Not necessarily aesthetically pleasing or well composed, but one that sticks in your head. The answer? It all comes down to people. The images above are some of their most memorable, while the ones after the break are the pictures that quickly flee your mind.

Wildlife photography takes patience, dedication—and ridiculously expensive and heavy, fast telephoto lenses, right? Not if you take a wider view that captures animals in their full environment. While tight portraits are the usual stock in trade of wild-life shooters, if your lenses aren’t long enough or you can’t get close enough, don’t just shoot and crop later.
