Film

There's a lot of artistry that goes into film scanning. Prepping the negative, tweaking the settings, and doing the final touches all take time. But, not everyone has the patience, or realistically the need, to endure that whole process. And for those people, this iPhone scanning station might is a convenient -- if very lazy -- solution.

OK, so things haven't been so great for film in the past decade, but people are still finding creative uses for it. For instance, students Luke Evans and Josh Lake thought it would be cool to eat it.They each actually swallowed some film and then let it pass through their bodies. There's an X-ray image that shows the piece of film in there. Then they, um, collected the film in the dark and actually went through the development process.

Photobooth is a store in the Mission of San Francisco; it is a combined film photography storefront, gallery space, and portrait studio for the near-lost art of the tintype. Coolhunting put together this video of a behind the scenes look at how photographer Michael Shindler snaps photos of people and produces incredible one-of-a-kind portraiture using this technique.   

Amid all the bad news surrounding Kodak, including the planned sale of its digital patents and online photo services, it seemed like the company’s film business would endure.  But Kodak announced recently that they are discontinuing three EKTACHROME (color reversal) films:  EKTACHROME E100G, EKTACHROME E100VS, and ELITE Chrome Extra Color 100.They estimate that you’ll still be able to find them on shelves for the next six months or so (but that’s based on current sales trends).
