In case you weren't aware, next week is the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We're not expecting it to be a super busy show on the camera front with Photokina just a few months back, but there will be new cameras to be had. The first one out of the gate comes from Samsung in the form of the updated "smart" NX300.

2012 proved a truly great year for cameras. In the wake of 2011’s devastating tsunami in Japan and flooding in Thailand, camera manufacturers released nearly two years’ worth of terrific models in 2012, all within a span of eight months.

Canon doesn’t refresh its EOS-1D line very often. This time, the world had to wait even longer than usual due to the tragedy of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the crushing tsunami it generated, and the (unrelated) flooding that rocked Thailand. And so the 18.1MP Canon EOS-1D X ($6,799, street, body only), announced back in October 2011, became available to retail buyers only in July of this year.

Lytro, makers of the Lytro plenoptic camera, has announced that an upcoming free update to its software will add a couple of new features for owners and future owners of their camera. Current Lytro owners will be able to download the update starting December 4th. Upon opening the software users will be prompted to allow the update if they so wish.
