Ricoh steps up to APS-C with it's latest compact camera

Ricoh had a hit back in the late 1990s with its GR1 compact film camera. Like the new GR, that camera had a fast f/2.8 wide-angle lens in a body that could fit into any jacket pocket. Like Ricoh’s more recent GR Digital cameras, the new GR sports a sensor instead of film. But with the drop of the word “Digital” from the model name comes a move to an APS-C-sized CMOS sensor that has about 8.6 times the surface area of the 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor found in its predecessor, the GR Digital IV.

With higher ISOs, faster burst rates, and better resolution, this upgrade has something for everyone

If you’re serious about your photography, but just as serious about value, Nikon’s D7100 ($1,197, body only) has likely caught your eye. Its 24MP APS-C-sized CMOS sensor promises lots of resolution; dual card slots help you organize while shooting and afford plenty of storage; and the pop-up flash can wirelessly trigger off-camera units. Plus, the 6-frame-per-second burst is fast enough for sports, while the 51-point autofocus system can track subjects while you capture the action.

Remember that thing I said earlier about this being the time of year for camera companies to update previous models? Well, the next up to bat is Nikon and they have an impressive-looking APS-C offering in the new D7100.

New Gear: Sigma DP3 Camera With An APS-C Sensor And Fixed 50mm Lens

Would you buy a camera with a fixed focal length equivalent of 75mm?

Somewhat oddly, it has been a pretty good CES for fixed-lens compacts. Yesterday, Fujifilm announced their new X100S digital rangefinder, and now Sigma has an update to their DP line with the DP3.Like the previous DP cameras, the DP3 lens doesn't zoom, rather it's a fixed 50mm F/2.8. Because the sensor is still an APS-C sized Foveon X3, that gives it a full-frame equivalent focal range of roughly 75mm.

Fujifilm is focusing on speed for their new X-series cameras

The biggest news to come out of CES 2013 so far comes in the form of Fujifilm's updated X-series advanced compact cameras. Both the X100 and the X10 have gotten revamps, resulting in the new X100S and X20 respectively. And while there have been some definite improvements in image quality, the primary focus is clearly speed.

A new body and four new lenses come to the NX line-up

Samsung revamped its NX line of ILC mirror-less cameras today with the more ergonomic and all around versatile Samsung NX200. Offering a 20.3 MP backside illuminated CMOS sensor, 1080p HD video capture (30fps), a 7 fps burst and impressive ISO range of 100-12800, Samsung has once again doubled down on their ILC line.What’s New: In comparison, the NX100 offered a 14.6MP sensor, 720p HD video capture, 3 fps burst and an ISO range of 100 to 3200—so right off the bat, the NX200 is a VAST improvement over its predecessor.

Consumer electronics giants are changing the way we photograph. Panasonic, Samsung, and now Sony are packing a slew of new features, from touchscreen focus control to 3D panorama shooting, into small cameras that have large sensors and trim lenses you can swap out. Indeed, among the traditional camera makers, only Olympus with its Micro Four Thirds Pen line has participated so far in the rise of interchangeable lens compact (ILC) cameras.
