Ask The Source is Popular Photography & Imaging's new podcast series where our editors interview the top experts in the photographic industry. In this first episode, we talked to Chuck Westfall, Director of Media and Customer Relationship at Canon USA, who fielded three questions (see below) that we received from our readers. Want to know the answers? Download and listen to the full podcast to find out.
QUESTION 1
Dear Canon,
I have an extensive amount of your products including seven lenses, two A2 bodies, three EZ flashes, virtually every cord and connector and A2 accessory in the catalog (the local camera store owner once told the Nikon rep I had more Canon inventory than he did). When I purchase a digital SLR, I will get a shoe-mount EX flash also. However, I'm reluctant to fork out for an EX macro flash that I don't use often. Exactly what works and what doesn't between EZ flashes and digital SLR's?

QUESTION 2
In summary, what this next question asks is: Does Canon have any plans to add more weathersealing to DSLRs below the 1D line?
Dear Friends,
My name is Pablo Contreras, I'm Argentinean, and live in Brazil for many years! I sent an e-mail already to Mr. John Owens about this subject, and he answered me that he was thinking about publishing it on POP PHOTO AUG issue. But now that I saw this "ASK the source", I think that it will be more appropriate, and maybe it reaches the ones I would really like to read this!!!!! As an outdoors photographer, taking pictures at mountains, Brazilian rainforest, etc, and a Canon SLR + lenses (4) owner, I didn't move to digital for a single reason!!!! Canon DSLR aren't sealed! I'm not talking about MARK II DS and MARK II N, but the lower price 20D, 30D, 5D, and of course, the fragile XT!!!! I can't afford a 7000 USD camera!!!! And that price only if I have a"smuggler" friend to bring the camera from the US, because here we are talking about 11000 USD (Brazilian taxes are huge!!!)
Here in latin america, carrying this expensive gear isn't very easy!!!!! Even in distant locations, we hear about robbers! That's why many colleges still work with old and less attractive - but still great - FM3's an similars in the streets!
Now, I'm willing to move to NIKON DSLR, because they have a great 10 MP camera, with sealed body!!!
How Canon could explain that I can buy a brand new EOS 3 or EOS 1N, for 800 and 1600 USD resp., that look like an US ARMY WAR TANK, with sealed bodies, and a 1400 USD DSLR like the 30D or a almost 3000 USD like the 5D hasn't at least rubber seals!!!!!!
What do they spect?! That I buy a new DSLR every year, after facing sensor problems with dust, moisture (You can imagine how Brazilian RAIN forests are), etc?!?!?!?!?!
I hope that Canon really LISTEN (as they say in their adv) to ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS, including NATURE photographers, and start producing sealed bodies, for "less expensive" DSLR!!!!
Maybe a good idea for the PHOTOKINA will be a 30D "N", or 30.1D, with 10MP and sealed body, to be a good match for the excellent D-200!
My deadline for moving to digital (and it won't be 100% - I still prefer slides and B&W film process) is the end of this year! I hope that they show something as we say in Brazil and Argentina "BBB product - Bueno, bonito y barato" (Good, beautiful and cheap).
Thanks and regards,
Pablo Darío Contreras
QUESTION 3
Dear Canon,
Please let me know, what is the difference between CMOS and CCD sensors in a DSLR camera? Which one is better and why? I am very much confused.
